Privacy Policy

About this policy

This policy explains what data China Decoded collects, why, and how it is handled. China Decoded is an independent studio project that helps travelers navigate Chinese cuisine. We keep data collection to a minimum.

Data that stays on your device

  • Preferences: your allergen settings, dietary restrictions, favorite dishes, and language choice are stored in your browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device and we cannot read it.
  • Scan sessions: temporary scan results are kept in your browser's sessionStorage and are cleared when you close the tab.

Data we receive

  • Submitted menu photos: if you use the report feature to send us a menu photo, that image is uploaded and stored in Cloudflare R2 storage so we can review it and improve our dish library.
  • Feedback messages: if you send a bug report or suggestion, the text and any page context you include are stored alongside it.

We do not ask for your name, and we do not operate user accounts. Please don't include personal information in a photo or message.

How we use it

  • Submitted photos and feedback: used to review, correct, and expand the dish library. Submissions may be reviewed by AI systems and by a human editor.
  • No data sales: we never sell your data.

Cookies, analytics, and advertising

China Decoded uses the following third-party services, which may set cookies or similar identifiers:

  • Google Analytics: we use Google Analytics to understand aggregate usage, such as which pages are visited and roughly where visitors come from. This helps us decide what to improve. See Google's Privacy Policy.
  • Google AdSense: we display ads through Google AdSense, including personalized ads. Google and its partners may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other sites. You can manage ad personalization at Google Ad Settings or opt out of third-party vendor cookies at aboutads.info.
  • Cloudflare: the site is hosted on Cloudflare, and submitted photos are stored in Cloudflare R2. Cloudflare processes requests to keep the site available and secure. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.

Data retention

  • localStorage / sessionStorage: remains on your device until you clear your browser data.
  • Submitted photos and feedback: retained so we can improve and verify the dish library.

Your choices

You can clear your local preferences at any time from the Settings page or by clearing your browser data. To request deletion of a photo or message you submitted, contact us at the address below.
